2. Absolutism and the State

May 21st, 2012

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) The rise of absolutism in Europe must be understood in the context of insecurity attending the religious wars of the first half of the seventeenth century, and the Thirty Years’ War in particular. Faced with the unprecedented brutality and devastation of these conflicts, European nobles and landowners were increasingly willing to surrender their independence to the authority of a single, all-powerful monarch in return for guaranteed protection. Among the consequences of this consolidation of state power were the formation of large standing armies and bureaucratic systems, the curtailment of municipal privileges, and the birth of international law. 00:00 – Chapter 1. The Lost Evidence: Stalingrad (2/5)

May 21st, 2012

On 23 August 1942, 330000 men of the German Sixth Army broke through Soviet defences outside the city of Stalingrad. It seemed as if nothing could prevent the fall of the city. Yet two months later, the Germans were locked in a deadly battle of attrition amid a wasteland of human carnage and pulverised rubble. Their offensive, which would become known as the Rat War, had become a murderous close-contact struggle. This episode reveals how Hitlers master plan to undermine the Soviet Union ground to a halt in the shattered ruins of Stalingrad, and combines extraordinary aerial reconnaissance photographs taken during the course of the battle with the latest in computer technology to create a three dimensional model of the city. Forgotten for over sixty years, these unique aerial images have been unearthed in the recently reopened archives of the former Soviet Union. The decisive battle of the Eastern Front can now be seen unfolding step by bloody step. As the centrepiece of his Eastern strategy, Hitler ordered his armies to strike south in order to seize the vital oilfields of the Caucasus region. In order to do this, they needed to capture Stalingrad and secure their northern flank. When the Panzers reached the city on the river Volga, they were on the border of Asia itself. However, for more than a hundred gruesome days, the Soviet defenders of Stalingrad made the German Sixth Army pay in blood for every inch of ground they won. The fast-moving tank columns of the

Caspian Sea countries’ summit in Iran – 16 Oct 07

May 21st, 2012

He’s the first Russian leader to visit Tehran since the second world war, and President Vladimir Putin’s visit comes at a crucial time. Iran’s standoff with the US and other world powers over its nuclear programme shows no sign of abating, and Russia has positioned itself as mediator. Just a few hours ago, Putin fired a warning shot at the US by making it clear that any use of military force in the Caspian region was unacceptable. Ayman Moheldine has this report. Amid much fan fare, pomp and even reports of an assassination plot the sitting president of Russia, Putin arrived in Iran. It is the first such visit by a sitting president since 1943 despite participating in a five-nation Caspian Sea Summit, it’s the relations between the two that will be closely watched. Now, Moscow, which has had traditionally warm ties with Iran, will attempt to iron out possible differences over Tehran’s nuclear energy program which it’s helping to develop. And this is where the Russians are doing exactly that the Bushehr Power Plant. It’s 90% complete but is still far from operational…Russian contractors say Iran hasn’t made timely payments a claim it denies. Tehran has said Moscow was delaying construction because of intense western pressure. That has made some Iranians lose trust. It’s not just bilateral issues that will dominate the headlines. Western powers will be watching the Putin’s visit very closely for any signs there’s a shift in Moscow’s policies over Iran nuclear program – a

Tennessee Guns Bulgarian AK-74 (5.45×39)

May 21st, 2012

Here is my Tennessee Guns (TGI, TNG) Bulgarian AK-74, which is caliber 5.45×39. This was built from a Bulgarian AK-74 parts kit and then they put a military spec black phosphate finish on it. This TNG Bulgarian AK-74 has always worked flawlessly, I have used the bulgarian surplus circle 10 or 21 magazines. I shoot corrosive ammo and clean this TNG Bulgarian AK-74 with windex or just hot water. I use MPRO-7 LPX Gun Oil on this AK-74 and it works awesome. This also has K-VAR furniture on it. www.captainberz.com **HISTORY** The AK-74: The AK-74 (Russian: ??????? ??????????? ??????? 1974 ???? or “Kalashnikov automatic rifle model 1974″) is an assault rifle developed in the early 1970s in the Soviet Union as the replacement for the earlier AKM (itself a refined version of the AK-47). It uses a smaller intermediate cartridge, the 5.45x39mm, replacing the 7.62x39mm chambering of earlier Kalashnikov-pattern weapons. The rifle first saw service with Soviet forces engaged in the Afghanistan conflict. The AK-74 is an adaptation of the 7.62mm AKM assault rifle and features several important design improvements. These modifications were primarily the result of converting the rifle to the intermediate-caliber 5.45x39mm cartridge, in fact, some early models are reported to have been converted AKMs, with the barrel re-sleeved to 5.45x39mm. The result is a more accurate and reliable rifle than the AKM. The AK-74 and AKM share an approximate 50% parts commonality (interchangeable most
